FOURKA
Today’s village
was built after the destruction og the old one by the Turks in 1854. Initially
it was built on a location called Mavroutsa, where a church of Virgin Mary
can be found(Zoodochos Pigi). The village was destroyed for the first time
and its inhabitants were enslaved by Algerian pirates who used to sweep
the coasts of Thermaikos. But after the second destruction, by the Turks,
the people abandoned their homes and built the village at its present time.
Today Fourka has approximately 700 inhabitants. There are many churches,
two of which are preserved monuments. The beautiful sandy beaches of Fourka
is one of the longest in halkidiki(2000 approximately)
