HANIOTI
According to the last census, the inhabitants are 524 but in the summer months they increase to 12500. The total area of our municipality is 2600 acres and consists of the village(150 acres), woods(1525 acres), land under cultivation(875 acres) and water(50 acres). As we learn from tradition the village got its name like this:its first inhabitants came from Chania(from Crete) and settled in the area of the old village which is the interior of Kassandra 2.5 kilometres to the south of the modern village. So people from the nearby villages used to say that the area was inhabited by a CHANIOTIS(a man from Chania). The village was moved to its present location in 1936 after an earthquake which ruined the old village completely. St George’s church was built there. The place is full of springs and rich vegetation. The village is decorated by thousands of flowers in the squares and the parks. Acres of land are covered by pine-trees which reach the shore and the deep-blue sea.
