POLIHRONO
It’s history
starts from 650 B.C. Then the peninsula was inhabited by settlers from
Eretria who built Neapolis, a city which managed to survive despite quite
a few barbarian raids until 540A.D. Then it was destroyed by the Huns.
In the 11th century farmers and cattle-breeders coming from the south hills
gathered in the area one kilometre to the east of ancient Neapolis and
built the village of Polichroun(=colourful) which took its name from the
numerous flowers existing in the area. In the years of the Turkish domination,
Polichroun lived unter the protection of the Holy Mountain. In the revolution
and more specifically on 14 November 1821, it was burnt and completely
destroyed by Turkish conquerors. A few years later some of the few survivors
who had found refuge elsewhere came back and rebuilt the village, the name
of which gradually changed from Polichroun to Polichrono. The village was
liberated from the Turkish domination in 1912. Today it is built on the
same slope, between the blue sea and the pine-tree forest and shows a remarkable
tourist development.
