The village was founded after the disaster in Asia Minor by refugees from Afthoni. It is built amphitheatrically with an excellent street plan, above the sea level and at the inmost part of the gulf of the Holy Mountain. It is surrounded by olive trees and low vegetation. From every part of the village you can see the majesty of the Holy Mountain and the peninsula of Sithonia. It has about 600 inhabitants. The patron Saint of the community is "Virgin Mary of Kastrella", whose icon was brought from the homeland by the refugees. It is 100 kilometres from Thessaloniki, through Arnea. A nearby settlement, Agios Ioannis Prodromos, with approximately 30 inhabitants is under the jurisdiction of our community.
