OURANOUPOLI
The village
is built near the place of the ancient city "Ouranoupolis" which was founded
in 316BC by Antipatros' son Alixarchos. After many centuries, with the
intention of controlling the area, the Byzantines built a huge Tower during
the reign of Andronikos. In 1922, after the disaster in Asia Minor, wandering
refugees came and built a beautiful little village where "Ouranidon Polis"
used to be. Ouranoupoli is the last "worldly" place, a sea port for the
Holy Community of the Monks of Athos. It is famous for the beauty of the
scenery, the dry climate(humidity 0), the emerald sea, a fame which has
gone beyond the borders of Greece. In 1962 the Xenia hotel was built in
the middle of a vast olive grove, with 5 beautiful villas which are attached
to it. Oriental style carpets, decorated with byzantine two-headed eagles
and indelible colours were and are the main occupation of the inhabitants
along with fishing and tourism. They equipped the village with whatever
was necessary for a pleasant stay without spoiling the natural environment.
A mosaic of people of different nationalities who visit the village are
accommodated in beautiful hotels and rooms to let.
N.RODA
The
community is in the north of the peninsula of Athos, at Xerxes' canal.
It was built after the disaster in Asia Minor by refugees from Roda, Antivallos,
and Skoupia in Asia Minor. Its population is about 1150 inhabitants. Xerxes'
canal is about 1.800 metres long and gives the village a great advantage,
access to two seas(the Gulf of Ierissos-Sigitikos Gulf). The village is
the nearest to the Holy Mountain from the ones beyond the canal. 500 metres
to the south west, the archaeological site of Sani can be found. The district
is considered as exceptionally beautiful. The patron Saint is Saint Nicholas.
There is also an icon of Virgin Mary which performs miracles.
