N.SKIONI
It is situated in the south of Kassandra. Nea Skioni was founded in 1918 on the spot where fishermen’s huts used to be. In 1930 the old village of Tsaparni, built on the mountain of Kassandra, 4 kilometres from the coast, was completely abandoned. The new village was named after ancient Skioni which was the oldest colony on the area. According to the ancient historian Thucidides, it was built right after the Trojan war by soldiers from Peloponnese, who stopped there to spend the winter. After the wars against the Persians it became a member of Athenean Alliance. During the Peloponnesean war Nea Skioni entered into alliance with the Spartans. After that the Atheneans conquered Skioni. They slaughtered all men over 18 and settled refugees from Platees there. Ancient Skioni prospered during Roman times and we don’t know exactly when it was completely destroyed. No part of the city remains today and from the variouw excavations that have taken place ancient coins and ceramics have been found. Today the village has 840 inhabitants and is the greatest fishing village of Kassandra. It faces the Agean Sea and has a very beautiful port. The nearby beaches and the pine-trees on the mountain of Kassandra impress the tourists. The inhabitants’ main occupations are:fishing, bee-keeping, olives and vegetable growing. The village is 5 kilometres from the spa of Agia Paraskevi.

KALANDRA

The village is built on the top of a hill, where the ancient town of Mendi was situated. Recently, excavations for the finding of the town have commenced. The oldest mention of Mendi is found in the history of Greek-Persian wars written by Herodotus. Manuscripts of the Holy Mountain dating from the 14th century refer to the area as "Kalandreou’s" and possibly this was the origin of the naming of today. Mendi was famous for the local winw that was kept in special urms designed by the great sculptor Lyssipos, forthe orgiastic Dionysiac feasts, and for the special race of …. Donkeys they had. Today the village has about 640 inhabitants. One kilometre away, and close to the cape of Kassandra, is the beachof Posidi where you also find the settlement with the same name.
