STAGIRA
This is the
town where the philosopher and teacher of Alexander the Great, Aristotle
was born. The village is built on the foot of the hill Argirolofos and
has approximately 500 inhabitants, but along with the neighbouring village
Stratoniki(the two villages have almost become one) the number of the population
increases to 1500. In beautiful and panoramic park of about 15 acres, to
the west of the village and on the road to Thessaloniki and Athos, is the
statue of the philosopher Aristotle and several ancient towers and buildings
of the "Iron burning", that is the processing of iron. The remarkable archaeological
site and the park with the statue are flooded by tourists, coming from
different places every day. The central church is monument built in 1814
with an excellent architecture.
OLYMPIADA
It is
a village built in 1924-25 by refugees from Agia Kiriaki in Asia Minor.
Because of ancient Stagira the area can be considered as the most important
historical site of Chalkidiki. Stagira was the home town of the great philosopher
Aristotle. It is located 1 kilometre to the east of Olympiada on
a peninsula called Liotomi. Tradition says that Olympiada was named after
king Alexander+AJI-s mother, Olympiada, who was exiled by king Kassandros
to the island of Kapros, opposite the village. Olympiada is built at the
side of a natural harbour. It is surrounded by a lot of magnificent beaches,
green mountains and forests. It is ideal for holidays all year, especially
in spring and in summer. Archaeological excavations started at the area
of ancient Stagira in 1990 and have been going on since then. A lot of
Classical and Byzantine findings(walls-pots-coins etc.) are on show at
an exhibition area of Olympiada.
