4.2.1 Network Characteristics

In the lecture, we discovered how computer networks have:

• Variable loss
• Variable latency
• Variable bandwdith

Some applications can either be built to tolerate these sort of characteristics (real-time media), or will be used in contexts where these conditions aren't true (strictly in under-used LANs).

These applications only require machine specific addressing to make use of the network.
